Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups 180g all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup 200g granulated sugar
  • ½ cup 45g unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¾ cup 180ml whole milk
  • ½ cup 120ml vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup 180ml boiling water

For Frosting and Decoration:

  • 1 ½ cups 340g chocolate buttercream frosting (store-bought or homemade)
  • ½ cup 120g white buttercream frosting (for laces)
  • Optional: chocolate sprinkles or edible football decorations for extra flair

Instructions

  • Preheat & Prepare:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Combine Wet Ingredients:
In another bowl, beat the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla together until smooth.
  • Mix Together:
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until combined.
  • Add Boiling Water:
Slowly pour in the boiling water. The batter will be thin—that’s what makes the cake super moist!
  • Bake:
Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool:
Let the cake cool completely on a wire rack
  • Shape the Football:
Once cooled, cut two small slivers off the sides of the cake to create a football shape. Save the scraps for snacking!
  • Decorate:
Frost the entire cake with chocolate buttercream. Use white frosting to pipe the laces and outlines of the football.
  • Set:
For clean cuts and sharper frosting details, refrigerate the cake for about 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Substitutions: Swap cocoa powder for dark cocoa for a richer taste.
  • Frosting Tip: For a smoother finish, dip your frosting spatula in warm water as you work.
  • Storage: Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
  • Serving Tip: Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent treat!
